Are You Mad at Ochsner?

We have gotten this question before and I'm sure that we'll really get it now. The natural reaction to Matt's diagnosis is "Why didn't the folks at Ochsner find this?".

I can't answer this question and I'm not sure if anybody else can.

It seems to us that they should have found it. It took the folks here at JH less than 2 weeks and they didn't use anything more sophisticated than an MRI to find the tumor. Of course neurosurgery was needed to get the lesion out in order to have it analyzed. Being here at JH allowed one of the best neurosurgeons in the world to remove the tumor.

It seems to us that the Ochsner neurologists gave up on Matt's case during the most recent 3 weeks when he was there. They may have lost their curiosity about what was causing his problems or they may have been upset with us for not going along with the brain biopsy that they wanted to do. It's possible that they may have diagnosed this correctly if they had done the biopsy but it is also true that the JH folks found the tumor with just MRI.

We do want to say that Matt got great care from some parts of the Ochsner system, especially the great nurses on 8 West, Matt's speech therapist, Charlotte and our primary care doctor, Dr. Jones.

All of this is now water under the bridge. It does us (and all of you) no good to get upset about what Ochsner should have done. We need to direct all of our energy toward the future and helping Matt get better. We have decided to look forward, not backwards and my recommendation is that all of you should also (I hope that doesn't come across as too preachy, it's not meant to).

I do request that you please refrain from bringing the subject up when you talk to us or write e-mails. It will be very hard to let this heal if it keeps getting raised again and again.

Thanks once again for all of your prayers and support. We need it and appreciate it. Even something that seems small like commenting on this blog really encourages us. We read all of the blog comments and they make us feel like there are a lot of people out there who are in this with us so keep it up.

  5. I truly believe that everything happens for a reason. We may never know the reason but we must accept it. I also believe in the power of prayer. Matt is where he needs to be to heal his body. My prayers are with you all. Matt is in so many prayer groups, not just locally, but in other states and even in Hungary!

  7. Just a little note of support and encouragement. I just couldn't let another day go by without telling ya'll about Robby's prayer on Sat. night. "Dear God, Please help Matthew get better. God, just show him what you can do! Please help the doctors make him all better. Amen". Rachel and I were so taken back with the humble sincerity. It was so PRECIOUS! Ya'll are in our thoughts and constant prayers.
We love ya'll and God does too!!!
