Dr. Cohen visited us this evening to talk about Matt's case. The test that they are running on his spinal fluid is looking at HCG and AFP levels. Test results should be in by tomorrow morning (Dr. Cohen confirmed this). The results will determine the type of tumor he has and thus the type of chemotherapy he needs. They are going to meet with us tomorrow evening and will likely start therapy Thursday. He will probably move to the pediatric ICU on Thursday.
We are so relieved to finally know what Matt has and that there is a treatment for it that we don't really care that it is cancer. After months of not knowing, it is great to know and have a direction. It is strange to say but knowing Matt has cancer is an answer to prayer!
Dr. Cohen is going to get us a list of doctors in New Orleans that he has confidence in and we will select one and start the process of working with that doctor when we are able to get Matt home.
Not much interaction with Matt tonight because he is still kind of sedated from the LP. We hope he is off the vent tomorrow.
Also tomorrow Lolly K (Are you kidding, there's no way I can spell her last name!) is coming to visit for a couple of days. We're looking forward to seeing a familiar face and laughing a lot.

John,
ReplyDeleteI pray for the best for Matt and you and the rest of your family.
Ben
We've been praying for answers and thank God they've come. We've been praying that his diagnosis is treatable and it is. We will continue to pray for Matt to have a full recovery. Again, health and healing to his nerves and death to the tumor and cancer cells.
ReplyDeleteI believe things happen for a reason. Why things happen we may never know and can only speculate, but God knew Matt needed the best doctors. For the tumor to be "hidden" until recently brought him to the best. If he'd been diagnoised here, chances are he'd been treated here and not had the best.
Praying also for a blood covering over Matt as he undergoes the chemo treatment. I don't know what side effects they are expecting, but praying they are minimal.
We love you guys,
Praise the Lord for an answer! Noel and John, We're praying for your strength and peace and clarity of mind in decision-making. Matt, praying for a full and rapid recovery and great comfort and physical ease during treatment. For all the wonderful doctors and nurses at JH, thank you and keep it up!
ReplyDeleteHugs to you all,
Laura Thompson
I know by this point, all our comments are beginning to sound alike, but nevertheless, please know that we are all still praying daily, nightly and in between for Matthew to make a full recovery and with the very fewest side effects of the therapy that will be prescribed. I totally understand what a relief it is to finally have a diagnosis and a plan of treatment. One day at a time I suppose is how all of you will get through, and God's grace will be more than sufficient.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to know that you guys are taking care of yourselves too. Exercise, manicures, anything that you can squeeze in is not only healthy, and stress relieving, but a blessing as well.
Keep your chins up guys....and know that we are all thinking about you everyday..all day!
We love you1

ReplyDeleteSo glad there is a diagnosis - that makes perfect sense that you would be glad - now Matt and you and Noel have a direction to go in. That is really a wonderful thing. Stay strong!
