Great News

For those of you who have not already seen this on Facebook, Matt's spinal fluid beta HCG test results came back normal today (the level was 4100 on 9/15/09 and is 3 now). beta HCG is a chemical that the type of tumor that Matt has makes (for more on this, click on the germinoma link to the left). The level in the spinal fluid is an indicator of the activity of the tumor and the latest results show that the tumor is not active or is dying. This is a great indication that the chemo is working.

Matt still has a lot of treatment and rehab to do but this result shows that the cancer is going in the right direction.

The pulmonologist was able to go down into Matt's airways this morning and clean out a lot of mucus and junk. Since then, his coughing fits have subsided and he is much more comfortable. He even got interested in the computer again tonight, which he hasn't in a couple of weeks. This may also have something to do with great improvements that have been made in the health of his eyes. His opthamology team has been very diligent and dedicated to caring for his eyes.

At the suggestion of Cliff Summers, I got a Slingbox and hooked it up to a cable box at home. Through this technology, Matt is now able to watch all of his favorite cable channels on the computer over the internet (including his beloved Food Network and ESPN).

Today has truly been a great day. We'll take it.

  2. What wonderful news about the spinal fluid results, Matt's decreased coughing, his eye health, and being able to hook up the Slingbox so he can get cable shows on his computer (never heard of doing it that way!)!!! May God continue to watch over Matt and all of your family and may you continue to have strong faith and belief that better days are ahead. Matt and your family are true role models about how to deal with adversity. Have a blessed New Year!!!
