Evening Update

We went to see Matt for the evening visiting hours and also saw Dr. McArthur. Matt looked better with the tube out of his mouth but he was still quite sedated. Dr. McArthur explained that they will slowly wake him up over the next couple of days while trying to keep him comfortable with his trachestomy. Dr. McArthur also told us that we have a quiet weekend coming up with no planned medical procedures.

As for the tumor, the team is now closer to believing that the tumor that was removed from his spine is related to what is going on with his cranial nerves. In fact, we got a late text message from Dr. McArthur saying that the lesion is a teratoma with germinoma. He also stated that this means that we will likely not need another biopsy. The team is working with neurooncologists to figure out a treatment (chemotherapy or radiation or some combination). This does not necessarily mean that the lesion is malignant but it is aggressive. I do not quite understand this subtle distinction but it seems to mean something to the Docs. You medical types out there are welcome to help us understand better.

It looks like we might have a treatment plan by mid next week.

Matt is back on tube feeding now and is tolerating it well. We're looking forward to him being awake enough to enjoy some football this weekend.
